A hotel is an organisation that provides paid accommodation, usually for a limited period of time. There are various reasons that people stay in a hotel, the following are but a few.
Choice:-
- Staying in a hotel is the first port of call for many people when they go on holiday and they will choose a hotel over a serviced apartment or rented cottage/house etc.
- As a gift for someone special. (Birthday, anniversary, etc).
- Winning a competition. (A weekend break or a “Murder Mystery Weekend” etc).
Necessity:-
- You may decide to stay in a hotel overnight because you’re too tired to safely continue your journey home.
- A company may pay for its workers to stay in a hotel if they are working away from home for any length of time.
- If it is necessary to be somewhere early the next morning (i.e. for a meeting or to catch a flight), staying the previous night in a hotel is sometimes the best option.
On the scale of things the hotel is generally on the ‘higher rung’ of the accommodation ladder; although in all towns and cities across the world there are hotels that are so run down and unkempt, you wouldn’t even want your mother-in-law to stay there!!
If you are looking for accommodation in which everything is done for you, the hotel is not the only option. You should also consider Guest Houses, Bed & Breakfast, Boarding Houses, Motels etc. These are all places which offer lodging, albeit under different guises and are described in more detail later. |
